3.4. Check of levels of liquids, control of leaks

Irrespective of check intervals according to the schedule do not assume that liquids followed under the car, such leaks indicate malfunction which should be eliminated immediately.

Liquids are the integral component of lubrication systems, coolings, the brake system, GUR, and a windshield washer. In view of a gradual consumption and pollution of liquids in the course of normal operation of the car, they should be replaced periodically. Add only the liquids conforming to requirements of Specifications.

At any check of level of liquid the car has to stand on a plain surface.

Motive oil

Visual control of leaks

At the greasy engine and a big consumption of oil check the following places for existence of leaks:


  1. Open a cover of a maslozalivny mouth and check consolidation for existence of cracks or damages.
    • Laying of a cover of a head of cylinders.
    • Laying of a head of cylinders.
    • Laying of an oil filter: a filter prileganiye to a flange.
    • Drain stopper of motive oil: sealing ring.
    • Laying of the pallet of a case.
    • Epiploons of a bent shaft.
    As in the presence of leak oil spreads on the big surface of the engine, at once it is complex to define its place. For detection of leaks act as follows:
  1. Wash out the engine for what close the generator and the block of safety locks a plastic bag, spray the engine a usual cold cleaner and through short time wash out water.
  2. Strew the interfaced surfaces and consolidations on the engine outside with lime or talc.
  3. Check the level of motive oil and if necessary add oil.
  4. With the purpose to warm oil make a trial trip on the car on distance about 30 km on the high-speed route. Viscosity of the warmed oil will go down, and it will quicker act in places of leaks.
  5. In conclusion investigate the engine, lighting it with a lamp, localize places of leaks and eliminate them.

Check and adjustment of level of oil

Check of level of motive oil is made by means of the measuring probe located in a forward part of the motive compartment (V6 engines) or which is built in a cover of a maslozalivny mouth (4-cylinder engines) — see illustrations the Components of a compartment of 4-cylinder engines which are subject to regular service, the Components of a compartment of the petrol V6 engine which are subject to regular service and the Components of a compartment of the diesel engine which are subject to regular service at the beginning of the Head. The probe passes through a metal tube down, reaching an engine case pallet bottom.

Measurement of level of motive oil should be performed in 2-5 min. after its switching off.

If to start measurement of level of motive oil right after switching off of the engine, a part of oil will remain in the top part of the engine and results of measurement will be wrong.


  1. Take the probe from a guide and dry wipe its edge with pure rags or a paper towel. Enter the probe up to the end back and again take it. Height of the site of an edge moistened with oil will correspond to oil level in the engine. This level has to be between tags of "MIN" and "MAX" on the probe.
  2. Rise in level of oil from the minimum tag on the probe to maximum requires about 1 l of oil. Do not allow falling of level below a tag of "MIN" since oil starvation can lead to damage of the engine. On the other hand, overflow of the engine oil (the dolivaniye is higher than the mark "MAX") can be the reason of oiling of spark plugs, leak of oil, failure of epiploons, and also damages of the catalytic converter.
  3. To add oil, uncover a jellied mouth, located on a cover of a head of cylinders (see illustrations the Components of a compartment of 4-cylinder engines which are subject to regular service, the Components of a compartment of the petrol V6 engine which are subject to regular service and the Components of a compartment of the diesel engine which are subject to regular service at the beginning of the Head). After a dolivaniye of oil wait several minutes that the level of oil was stabilized, then pull out the probe and again check level. If it is required, add still oils. If on a cover pollution are found, wash out it gasoline. Close a cover of a mouth and turn it before click.

Check of level of oil is the important preventive procedure and has to be made as often as possible, and also it is obligatory before each long trip. Continuous excessive falling of level of oil indicates or existence of its leaks through the damaged epiploons or the weakened connections, or its burning out (internal leaks through worn-out piston rings or via the directing plugs of valves).

Besides, it is necessary to pay attention and to a condition of the oil. If oil has dairy color or in its structure it is possible to notice water drops, it indicates possible violation of tightness of laying of a head of cylinders or existence of a crack in a head or the block of cylinders. In this case the engine should be repaired immediately. Run every time at measurement of level of oil before rubbing of an edge of the probe over it big and index hand fingers. If at the same time the particles of dirt or metal particles which stuck to the probe are found, oil should be replaced (see the Section Replacement of Motive Oil and Oil Filter).

Cooling liquid

Do not allow hit of antifreeze on skin or on the painted surfaces of the car. If all this occurred, immediately wash away antifreeze a plentiful amount of water. Antifreeze is extremely toxic therefore do not leave it unguarded in an open container or spilled on a floor; children or animals its sweet smell can attract and they can drink it.

Do not uncover a jellied mouth of a broad tank or a radiator cover for check of level of the cooling liquid (CL) before full cooling of the engine!

Check of level and state

The considered cars are equipped with the cooling system of compensation type with excessive pressure. The plastic broad tank is located in a motive compartment and connected by a hose to a radiator.

Broad tank of the cooling system

In process of an engine warming up in the course of its work the extending cooling liquid (CL) fills a tank. When cooling the OZh engine automatically comes back to the cooling system that provides maintenance of the OZh constant level.

Check of the OZh level should be made regularly, at least, an every month, and also before each long trip. Level in the tank fluctuates depending on engine temperature. At the cold engine the OZh level has to be above the lower (short) tag on the tank. In process of heating of the engine level has to approach the top (long) tag or exceed it a little. If it not so, let's the engine cool down, then uncover the tank and modify the OZh level.

For filling of the cooling system apply surely mix from water, antifreeze and means to protection against corrosion of aluminum according to requirements of Specifications.

If there is a need of filling of the cooling system for a way, then it is possible to apply clear water in the summer. Antifreeze can be added later, however as soon as possible.


  1. If the OZh level quickly goes down, visually check the cooling system for leaks:
    • Check a condition of hoses and reliability of their fastening on branch pipes, replace the damaged hoses and collars;
    • Check consolidation of a cover of a broad tank;
  2. If leaks are not revealed, make check of tightness of a cover of a radiator.
  3. It is also necessary to check a condition of OZh, – it has to be rather pure. If liquid has brown or rusty color, it it is necessary to merge, wash out the cooling system and to fill it with new mix. Even if OZh looks normally, the corrosion inhibitors which are its part lose over time the efficiency therefore OZh should be replaced periodically.

For check of frost resistance of OZh use the areometer.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid at hit in eyes and on the painted surfaces of the car can damage them therefore be extremely careful at the treatment of her. Do not use brake fluid which long time stood open, or which there are more than one year. Brake fluid has property to absorb moisture from air that can worsen its properties and lead to dangerous loss of efficiency of the brake system. Use only the type of brake fluid specified in Specifications. Mixing of various types of liquids can lead to failure of the brake system.

The tank of brake fluid is in the left part of a motive compartment, about its partition (see illustrations the Components of a compartment of 4-cylinder engines which are subject to regular service, the Components of a compartment of the petrol V6 engine which are subject to regular service and the Components of a compartment of the diesel engine which are subject to regular service at the beginning of the Head), and is divided into two parts, everyone for the brake contour. The cover of the tank has an air vent which should not get littered. Transparent walls of the tank allow to watch liquid level outside. For control of level of brake fluid is available To/L the low level of brake fluid, located on a combination of devices (see the Head Governing bodies and methods of operation). Nevertheless, it is recommended to check liquid level regularly.

Liquid level at the closed cover has to be between the marks "MIN" and "MAX" in tank walls. You watch that level did not fall below the mark "MIN".

  1. If level is lower admissible, at first wipe top of the tank and a cover with pure rags to prevent hit of dirt in system after removal of a cover. Add liquid to the necessary level, but do not pour.
  2. Until the tank is uncovered, check brake fluid and the tank for existence of pollution. If at it there are particles of a rust, dirt or a drop of water, liquid should be replaced.
  3. After addition of the tank to the necessary level make sure that the cover is established exactly, in order to avoid leak of liquid and/or hit of dirt.
  4. Liquid level in the main brake cylinder (MBC) will fall slightly as a result of wear of frictional overlays of brake shoes. There is no need to add it until level remains near a tag of "MIN"; it will rise after replacement of slips. Very low level can indicate wear of brake shoes – check them (see the Section Check of the Brake System).
  5. If the level of brake fluid constantly falls, immediately check all system for existence of leaks. As a rule, worn-out caps in wheel cylinders are the reason. Survey brake lines, hoses and nipple connections together with supports, wheel cylinders and GTTs (see the Sections Check of the Brake System and Check of a State and replacement of hoses and tubes in a motive compartment, localization of leaks).
  6. If when checking level of liquid the tank is empty or almost empty, the brake system needs to be checked for existence of leaks and to pump over (see the Section Replacement of Brake Fluid, pumping of the brake system).

Liquid of the power steering (GUR)

Location of the tank of hydraulic system of the amplifier of steering (GUR) is specified on illustrations the Components of a compartment of 4-cylinder engines which are subject to regular service, the Components of a compartment of the petrol V6 engine which are subject to regular service and the Components of a compartment of the diesel engine which are subject to regular service at the beginning of the Head.


  1. Be passed on the car that the engine and steering had normal operational temperature (near the 80th hail.).

Level of GUR liquid should be checked at once after an engine stop.

Level of liquid has to be between the marks put on the probe which is built in a GUR liquid tank cover and should not fall for the lower mark.

  1. If necessary add the liquid conforming to requirements of Specifications.

Do not shake up liquid before filling of system since otherwise air bubbles can be formed. Fill in liquid slowly to exclude formation of bubbles. Apply only new liquid since even insignificant pollution can lead to failure of the GUR system.

  1. After filling of system start the engine and several times turn a steering wheel from an emphasis against the stop that quitted air the system.

Emergence of requirement of a dolivaniye of GUR liquid indicates leaks in system. Check the GUR system in conditions HUNDRED.

Liquid of automatic transmission (ATF)

Correctness of the ATF level is one of critical operational parameters of the cars equipped with AT. Excessive falling of the ATF level can lead to pro-slipping of the hydrotransformer whereas the excessive amount of liquid leads to its foaming, to formation of leaks and is fraught with a transmission exit out of operation.

Check of the ATF level should be made at warmed up to the normal working temperature (the 80th hail.) transmissions.

It is not necessary to make check of the ATF level right after operation of the car at high speeds, in the conditions of a city cycle in hot weather, or after towage of the trailer, - previously let's liquid cool down within about 30 minutes.

Check of the ATF level


  1. Park the car on the flat horizontal platform with a hard coating, cock the parking brake. If the engine cold, start it and warm up up to the normal working temperature on single turns. At the working engine squeeze out a pedal of a brake and serially carry out the AT selector lever through all provisions, in conclusion, having returned it to situation "P".

Before moving of the lever to each subsequent situation wait for not less than 15 pages.

  1. Without suppressing the engine, take the measuring probe from the directing tube. Fingers remove traces of ATF from a probe edge and estimate its condition.
  2. Carefully wipe an edge with pure rags and enter the probe back into the directing tube, having densely put a cover on a mouth.
  3. Again take the probe from a mouth and determine the ATF level in a transmission case by length of the moistened site of a scale.
  4. In case of need make the corresponding adjustment, having added to transmission liquid of the required grade through a funnel, - fill in ATF directly in a mouth of the directing tube of the measuring probe.

Increase in the ATF level from a tag of "MIN" to a tag of "MAX" requires about 0.5 l of ATF.

  1. Add ATF in the small portions in stages, every time checking level.
  2. Along with level it is necessary to check as well a condition of ATF. If the liquid moistening the end of an edge of the probe has a dark red-brown shade, or smells of ashes, ATF should be replaced (see the Head Automatic transmission). In the absence of confidence in correctness of assessment of a condition of transmission liquid compare it on color and a smell to fresh ATF.

Windshield washer liquid, installation of field of washing

Liquid for washing of a windshield should be added to the tank through a jellied mouth.

In areas with a temperate climate for washing of glasses it is possible to use usual water, but it is recommended to add to it means for washing of glasses. The tank should be filled no more than on two thirds that there was a free space on a case of expansion of water when freezing. In areas with cold climatic conditions it is necessary to use the special antifreeze for washing of a windshield reducing a liquid freezing point. Usually it is on sale in the concentrated or ready look. Mix the concentrated antifreeze with water according to the instruction of the producer given on packing.

Check and if necessary adjust a washer scope, turning nozzles according to an illustration.

RKPP gearbox oil

RKPP refuels oil at the plant and then does not demand service. However after the repair of RKPP demanding it depletion it is required to fill oil and to check its level. For descent, gas stations and checks of the RKPP gearbox oil are provided 3 corresponding openings closed by traffic jams.

The stopper of a drain opening contains the magnet collecting the metal particles which are formed at wear of the RKPP mechanism.

Oil level in RKPP has to reach the lower cut of a control opening.
